Never Forgotten

Tis the season of Remembrance.

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

To all the cherished ones, you are always in our hearts.
And to those forgotten, you are a part of all Eternity and one with all.

A Season for Remembering

“Death smiles at us all, all we can do is smile back.” ~ Marcus Aurelius

It’s no secret that Fall is my favorite season. With it’s color changing leaves, crisp air and a general feeling of renewal, to pumpkins, hoodies and Halloween preparations, there is also something happening in the undercurrent. A stopping of sorts that lends to a deepening… a turning inward to remember.

Making Light out of Shadows
I bow to the cycle of Life and Death
Honoring all that has come before me
I celebrate Life, by remembering the Dead.

Every year I observe and celebrate Allhallowtide, which is the combined holidays of All Hallows’s eve (October 31st), Hallowmas or All Saint’s Day (November 1st), and All Souls’ Day (November 2nd). In Mexico this is most popularly known as Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

This is a time to remember our beloved departed, as well as to celebrate the life they had and honor the life that is around us. And so altars are built in their memory, it is said that this time of year the veil between the worlds are at their thinnest and the dead can cross over to come visit their loved ones. The altars generally include offerings of sweets and liquid so the dead may rest and feast with the living. To see more of my 2014 Ofrenda (altar) click here.

“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?”
~ Edgar Allan Poe

Hay más tiempo que vida
(There is more time than life)

During this season of remembering, and all year round, may our loved ones passed be always present in our hearts.

Over a year ago I wrote {Death’s Song} which was published over on the Women’s Spiritual Poetry website as well as in their poetry anthology book Journey of the Heart, and my friend who created this image reminded me of how timely this poem is this time of year… How it reminds us that there is always a new beginning after an ending.

When I sit with my ancestors, I’m sitting with everything that has ever been/was and is. We are all connected. Celebrating this boundless interconnection on this Day of the Dead.

Feliz Dia de Los Muertos. May we remember and be grateful for the time we have here and for the people we share it with. I am SO thankful.

Making light of the shadows,
I bow to the cycle of life and death.
Honoring all that has come before me,
I celebrate life, by remembering the dead.
