Stacks of Poetry Books

This month is National Poetry Month and we’ve been celebrating all things poetry over at Be You Media Group. In the last edition of our weekly Love List we all contributed a picture with our favorite most indispensable poetry books. These are the ones that have spoken straight to my heart and the pages that I return to over and over again. Do you have a favorite? A whole stack of favorites?

Artist of the Week: Toko-pa Turner

tokopapering

It was such a treat to interview and feature Toko-pa Turner as Be You Media Group’s Artist of the Week. Toko-pa’s work and Facebook page Dreamwork with Toko-pa have long inspired me, so I was looking forward to finding out more about her journey and what inspires her. Her intimate answers spoke volumes of her dedication to her creativity and how it propelled her along the way.

“The deeper I went into my own darkness, the richer my life became. And this is now the central ethos of my work with dreams. At any given moment, we are either turning away from or coming into congruence with our kinship with mystery. Only when we wrestle to keep that endangered language of sensitivity alive do we have a chance at living a meaningful life. But more than that, this is how we become necessary to the urgency of our times.”

Check out the full interview here.

And if speaking the language of dreams has piqued your curiosity, Toko-pa is offering an amazing 4-week online course Dreamwalking and is offering a pre-registration price until Friday. More information here.

Artist of the Week: Cameron Gray

Awake-Could-Be-So-Beautiful

Awake Could Be So Beautiful

I had the awesome pleasure of interviewing Parable Visions artist Cameron Gray for Be You Media Group’s ‪‎Artist of the Week‬ feature I help curate. Cameron has long inspired me with his otherworldly mystical works, but what blew me away the most from chatting with him was his story of persistence and always following where his passion lay, with his art.

“But through it all I just stayed focussed on what I was doing, when I was starving hungry I’d just focus even more on my art, it was always a form of escape for me in those years and the only thing I felt I had going for me.”

Check out the full interview here.

Everyday Sacred {#2}

Everyday Sacred 2

“The heart is like a mirror. When we dust it off, we are able to see ourselves.
The dust is all our stuff – guilt, anger – this stuff is reflected back to us.
Practice removes the dust from the mirror of our hearts.” ~ Krishna Das

What’s a Sadhana?!

The word “Sadhana” is a Sanskrit term literally translating to “accomplishing something” in regards to spiritual development, and includes daily work through observing, reflecting and subsequent action with the goal of enriching ourselves. Traditionally, it entails disciplined practice in order to transcend the ego with its final goal being that of enlightenment. This is all true for me; however I would add that my Sadhana is also…

A prayer in action

A solid grounding in the Here & Now

A doorway to deeper experiences

A way to see past what’s right in front of me

And to connect with the whole…

It’s my daily sacred commitment to myself.

I practice to move beyond the pain and suffering of this world, to “remove the dust” from my heart, and to continuously re-connect to both the sacred and the magic that is all around and within — while taking solace in this interconnection. You could call it whatever you want really because it’s the dedication and intention behind it that counts.

When we take the time for our own sacred self-care, we feel a big difference in our day-to-day. At least I know I do. Cultivating this kind of practice is to further our journey inwards so we can remind ourselves that we really never left. We are already a part of the divine that pulses through the entirety of the world, both seen and unseen.

Most of the time, rather than having some grand expectation of hours spent in Sadhana devotion, I find what works better—and is far more realistic—is to carve out little moments throughout my day, wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, and turn inwards. It’s important however to remember that finding what works best for each of us is something that we have explore a bit, making the proper adjustments until the practice clicks.

So, what do I do during these stolen Sadhana moments? Here is a quick list of the practices I might incorporate depending where I am and how much time I have:

Yoga
Meditation
Journaling
Reading from spiritual/inspirational texts
Art making
Chanting
Ceremony
Reciting a mantra (Japa Yoga)
Breath work (Pranayama)
Prayer
Healing work
Reflecting/Contemplating
Tarot card reading
Walk in nature

Some of these I do daily, some of these happen when I have more time and feel inspired to do so, but at a minimum I do something every day. And remember, this is just the sacred grounding work that speaks to me, which may not resonate for you, and that’s absolutely fine. What other practices would you have on your own list? I truly believe in the saying “To each their own”, so go with whatever truly speaks to your heart.

Nurturing

Moving forward, we’ll begin to look into specific practices and I’ll share how I personally incorporate them. As always, I can only convey my own experiences, and I look forward to hearing about yours.

Until next time remember, you’ve already arrived, you’re already home. The Sacred is within and all around you… We already have all that we need.

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of featuring Mindy Tsonas as Be You Media Group’s Artist of the Week. Seeing artists work from their heart, and offer their gifts and perspective to the world, inspires me tremendously on my own creative path. Mindy certainly puts her heart and soul into her work and into her Alchemy Cards.

“The foundation of my work and practice is in the cards – Alchemy Cards, that I create and call upon as part of my grounding daily intuition and creativity. I circle with women in creative covens to teach them this practice and to use this powerful tool and personal talisman in their own lives. We learn to focus energies, delve in to personal truth, connect authentically and boldly, and manifest JOY and LOVE together. The cards are the physical magic we create – the actual magic is in the guided process of creating your own deck.” ~ Mindy Tsonas

Practice Repeat

Life can sometimes feel like it’s slipping through our fingers. Rushing through our days, I’m sure everyone at some point has exclaimed “where the hell did the day go?!” and next thing you know it’s a new season. I mean it’s kind of inevitable as time here only moves forward, but when this becomes the status quo, life’s enjoyment slips away too.

It has been through cultivating my daily spiritual practice (or Sadhana) that I learned I could slow things down. In this conscious choice to savor every day a little more, I found a deeper grounding experience within, because it’s in these stolen moments that I remind myself to fully inhabit the here and now; I acknowledge myself, and the care that I need to be happy, healthy and yes, holy. After all, we’re all connected and each of us is an integral part of the sacred current of all things.

When I put the brakes on the motions and commotions of daily life, and calm the monkey mind which is continually jumping from one thought to another, I can, if even just for a few moments, bear witness to the sacredness pulsing throughout my entire essence of being. I can honor my inner self, my heart, my Buddha nature. I make room to appreciate all things, to soften when I’d rather harden and to open up rather than shutting down.

I’ve heard people say over and over again that they don’t have time for a daily practice, or that they started but “life” happened and then stopped. I assure you that I’m not talking about hours here, or even a solid hour. It’s definitely awesome if you do have that time to dedicate to your practice, sometimes I do, but on most days, between work, raising my daughter, and life in general, I just don’t. I try my best to steal a bit of time upon waking, maybe a bit of time after work, and then a bigger chunk of time before bed, but it all depends on what’s going on and has to be taken day by day… and I honor that.

It’s life and we just gotta flow with it and be flexible. I know that if I’m too hard on myself, say about doing an hour of yoga every day, that I’ll get discouraged when I don’t. That practice then becomes a burden and actually a source of stress, which is totally the opposite of what it’s supposed to be right? So I’ve learned to let it be what it’s going to be for however much time it’s going to be. As long as I show up for that sacred time every day—whether it’s five minutes, ten, fifteen, half an hour, or hell, even a full flippin hour! I’ll take what I can get, and it’s way better than not showing up at all.

For all these reasons, this column will pop up sporadically. I can’t say with what frequency because I just gotta go with the flow. Just like my practice. But I’ll show up here and share with you some of my favorite practices, little glimpses inside my own Sadhana and inspiration that invites us all to tap into the sacred around us and ultimately back to ourselves.

10301451_10152461577902457_8266396306111146346_n

A gentle disclaimer: I’m eclectic, like mega diverse. I gather inspiration from wherever my heart leads me, from whichever culture, style and time in space that tickles my fancy. If it pulls me, I follow. With that said, not everything that I’ll discuss during the course of this column will necessarily resonate with you, and that’s totally cool. Like me, follow your heart. You are cultivating your own practice right? Keep what inspires you and leave the rest.

I’d love for you to share your experiences with me too! Or, if you have any questions or insights or general feedback, I want to hear it! You can either do so by commenting in the posts themselves, or you can email me at perilsoftheliving@rocketmail.com. Who knows, maybe your questions and/or comments will become the topic of a future column (without naming names of course). So let’s get interactive with this, and help and encourage each other to see the sacred in our everyday lives!
